A Review Study on Total Ankle Replacement

Total ankle replacement (TAR) is the of a damaged arthritic joint with prosthetic implant to eliminate source resultant pain and swelling. Historically, however, has been one most difficult joints analyze replicate for successful due its complex anatomy multiplanar motion. Ankle fusion, standard care end stage arthritis, excellent functional outcomes but results in loss motion at joint. TAR was first attempted 1970s by early 1990s, prosthesis designs more closely mirrored natural no longer considered an experimental procedure. Although have significantly improved over this short period time, there are still many areas that warrant further investigation including (1) optimal patient selection, (2) number components, (3) bearing type, (4) revision rates causes (5) comprehensive finite element models (FEM) ankle. The main goal paper present literature review on background evolution TAR, current state practice types challenges directions future improvement.
